This study was directed at providing
a comparison of engineering degrees,
both undergraduate and doctoral, on
an international scale. Data from
ninety-one countries are included.
These countries include almost 80%
of the world population. Although
information from some countries was
incomplete, the statistical data
presented provide a comprehensive,
global view of engineering
education.
Undergraduate degrees awarded since
the early 1980s for China, Germany,
Japan, South Korea, the United
Kingdom and the United States are
presented; doctoral degrees over
this period are presented for China,
France, Germany, India, Japan, South
Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom
and the United States. Recent
undergraduate degree data for
essentially all countries are
compared on the basis of total
number of degrees, degrees per
population of persons 24 years of
age and degrees per total
population. Recent doctoral degree
data for forty-three countries are
compared on the basis of total
number of degrees and doctoral
degrees per total population.
Degrees awarded to women are also
compared in terms of both the total
number of degrees and the fraction
of degrees awarded to women.
Undergraduate data are presented for
sixty-six countries and doctoral
data are presented for thirty-two
countries.
Undergraduate and graduate
enrollments of foreign national
students in Canada, France, Japan
and the United Kingdom are compared.
The countries of citizenship for
these foreign national students are
presented.
